Slightly shocked as we speed into September, here’s this week’s round up in the world of sustainability.
Greta is greeted in New York as she reaches the city after two weeks travelling via a zero carbon yacht ahead of the Climate Summit. Whilst the Amazon fires and $20m funding are rejected by Brazil, it is reported there are more fires actually burning in Angola and the Congo. On the tangent of forestry, Trump sizes up Tongass National Forest in Alaska for mining and logging proving no lessons are yet to be learnt. Brexit back stop aside, Ireland faces challenges as it is reported it creates the most fume pollution in the EU.
Elsewhere, Rolls Royce collab with Norwegian airline Widerøe to target zero emission flights and the design of electric planes. In hospitality, Marriott Intl announce they will no longer use single-use plastic toiletry bottles, as they currently send 500 million to landfill every year. This aims to save over 1.7 million plastic bottles!
In the UK, fracking activities cause tremors in Blackpool and the first plastic free nursery in Tyne focuses on early eco education. Extinction Rebellion make their moves up North as protests shut down central Manchester. In retail M & S makes moves for the Merry Christmas period as it opts for glitter-free Christmas cards and wrap whilst Vans pledges against the use of Brazilian leather following events in the Amazon.
