S & S News: The Week in Highlights – 02.03.2019

In news this week, we can only imagine the skyrocketing of Whispering Angel and Provence rosé sold on rooftops as the close of February saw record breaking temperatures of 20º across the UK.

Across the Atlantic, US Congress passes the Natural Resources Management Act with a landslide victory of 363 – 62 in favour. The act sees the protection and preservation of almost 2.4 million acres of public lands from future mining operations and designates over 1 million acres of land as wilderness, the majority of which is reserved for recreation and conservation. No walls built there Mr. Donald T.

Charities continue to falter over fund raising merchandise as it is reported that Oxfam paid workers paid 55c/ hour to supply major Australian fashion labels and Holly Willoughby’s ‘Girl power’ charity t-shirts are produced by low wage factory workers in Bangladesh. The irony.

On the landscape of luxury, Kering Group set the standards for traceability amongst luxury conglomerate supply chains and Selfridges ban exotic skins. Meanwhile at #ParisFashionWeek Stella McCartney pioneers with her latest campaign ‘There She Grows’ which encouraged audience members  of her show to dedicate the planting of a tree to someone special. Funds are donated to protecting Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem, an area of ancient tropical rain forest that covers more than 6.5 million acres. (Link to participate is below.)

Finally, fear not Glastonbury golden ticket holders for it will be a sustainable sesh and raving with your refillable bottles as the festival bans plastic bottles in a bid to reduce waste.
